Fleisch! (2009)
3-channel video-installation, loop, PAL, color, sound
The point of departure for this work is Merleau-Ponty's notion of Chiasm as the self-revelation of the sense of a world in and through a being which is itself a part of the world, flesh (fleisch) of its flesh. "Flesh" is then where being and world meet: Being is always part of the world - likewise the world is always experienced through being.
Three CRT monitors mounted on a wooden step stool feature Ituarte and two other women dressed in pink/yellow/turquise plaid corsets, facing the camera as they eat a Haxe (typical German dish consisting of a grilled pig knee), while simultaneously covering their breasts with their arms. Struggling in the act of consuming the meat, the women at times look up directly into the camera in a play of gazes which pulls the spectator into the work. |
